This was a rather nice wedding, partly because it coincided with my birthday (so I had a thoroughly enjoyable day sharing someone else’s celebrations) and partly because it was in the middle of all that Christmas snow. I received a frantic phone call early evening, just as I was settling down for my evening meal. A production company in Lytham were having their final practice that evening before their opening of Sweeney Todd in Lytham at the weekend. I was asked to provide some “corporate” staff images for the Tickled Trout, near Preston, essentially for PR and their brochure etc. Hmmm, corporate staff images, eh? Sounds kinda stuffy to me. You know, those bland boardroom shots, or is that boredom shots?
Last Sunday I was photographing a marshal arts tournament in Wakefield. This had been a follow on from a previous shoot I’d done for one of their academies in the summer. When first asked to photograph the tournament, it stirred old memories of the Judo and Karate competitions I had entered, some thirty five years ago. I’ve already talked about this particular shoot in a previous entry. But this one image grabs my attention every time I see it, no matter what I’m doing. The whole assignment had several challenges on the evening, especially with it taking place in a very busy bar on their busiest night of the week. But the main priority was to get the required image.
How does this image look to you? I mean, how was it taken? Does it look like a studio shot, low key lighting for a moody feel to it? Well, far from it, actually.

The weather was pretty abysmal, light showers on and off all day, whereas I’d been hoping for a clear blue sky to make an impact on the wheat field. Well, it just wasn’t going to happen, was it. So, I have to work with what I have, and if the sky is overcast and threatening, make it a feature.
This was a commercial shoot for the Rocket Centre in Blackburn. ok, so it’s not a product shot as such, although the portfolio was to show the team members along with their bikes. This is Lee Buck, the team captain, giving his best “serious” look.
