This assignment was for a number of clients, including the Preston Marriott Hotel, Zoe Cookson (importer of couture wedding gowns) and Live Magazines. It also afforded me the opportunity to test the new Lencarta Safari Li-on location lighting equipment, which is the latest version of my own location lighting workhorse, the Safari Classic.
A change of tack here, as this time it was to be a male makeover for Toni and Guy. Again, similar restraints regarding the work area (four feet by six), but my approach would be a little different. Again, this was for an article for Live Preston magazine.
The Marriott brochure shoot seemed to develop into far more than just a straightforward wedding venue brochure shoot. We managed to combine three the assignment into the one shoot.
This image is from the last part of the informal portrait session I tend to do, between the wedding breakfast and the evening reception. I’d gotten some nice backlit shots with the Lencarta Safari, but wanted a change of tack.
This is a technique I’d been wanting to use for some time, and just wasn’t presented with the opportunity. Either the weather wasn’t right, or the background wasn’t good, or the image just wasn’t going to suit the couple. However, this time it all fell into place. And the irony of it is, I had the right weather, backdrop and suitable couple only two weeks
This was a fairly straightforward remit. Photograph one of the business partners (no problem there), make it a businesslike environment (plenty of spare office space, so that’s ok too), and make him look like he means business! (oops).
Photographing hair for salon shots is quite demanding. You need more lights than usual and more patience than usual. You also need a model that can maintain a pose within the given area dictated by the gridded hair light. This was a very straightforward brief for the Live Magazine group. Just some basic images to go with a road test of the latest incarnation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I don’t do basic. If I’m asked to photograph an item, be it a simple box or a brand new car, I will give each the attention they deserve.
The bride had one particular request when I met the couple six months before the wedding. There was no room for bartering or negotiation, it had to be adhered to. They both wanted a portrait with Pendle Hill in the background.
I have to say, I do like vehicle photography. Possibly a tug from my younger days perhaps, but all the same, it’s always enjoyable. There can be a number of challenges, such as reflection on the paintwork, chrome or glass. In fact, there tends to be little on a vehicle that won’t reflect!
